Dynamics GP 2010 Log in Windows

Posted Thursday, February 18th, 2010

With all of the excitement and buzz surrounding Dynamics GP 2010, I too, finally got a copy.  It feels a little like Christmas.  Dynamics GP 2010 has some really…can I say, “Cool” new and revamped features.  However, there is one functionality that I would like to address and that would be the log in windows.  Not that it is not “Cool” but it may be a little food for thought for those entities that have to be SOX compliant for system security audits or have a less liberal security policy.

Let’s take a look at the new log in windows

The Company Login window has a “Remember this company” check box.  If you check this box then upon next login this window is skipped and you go directly to the User Login window.  If you need to open Dynamics GP in another company or would like to turn off this feature you would go to (Microsoft Dynamics GP>>User and Company).  This will open the Company Login window.  So, if this is the first or only company you log into you can enable this feature and skip this window altogether. In my book that is “Cool.”

The User Login window has the “Remember user and password” and by default this functionality is not activated.  It is only activated by going to the System Preferences window and check “Enable Remember User” box.  If your administrators of system security say that you are only mandated by your local domain login or in other words the user and password used when you first log into your computer then this is a great feature.  On the other hand, if you have to be SOX compliant then you may want to check with your auditors before activating this feature.

Furthermore, from a security viewpoint it is always best practice to evaluate security settings from time to time.  As employees move into new rolls or exit the company security cleanup is necessary.  Also, you would want to review which users have access to setups and system preferences to secure these windows to administrative personnel only.
