Dynamics GP 10 – Custom Links

By in Dynamics GP, System on Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

There are so many features in Dynamics GP 10 the numbers are limitless.  One such feature found and worth bringing to light again if you do not remember from previous training is “Custom Links.”

With “Custom links” you have the ability view a webpage, open documents in Word, Excel or some other application for customers, vendors, items, salespeople and employees.  If you use tracking numbers for shipping you can create a link based on document method.  Link to a shipper’s website.  Link to your favorite currency website if you are using multicurrency to check the latest spot rate.  Credit Card links and Banking Institutions can be linked based on checkbook.

Here’s how it works….

There is a window to set up the “Custom Link”

Microsoft Dynamics GP>>Tools>>Setup>>Company>>Custom Link

Custom Link1

Click the “New” button

Custom Link2

In this example, we are going to setup a link to a vendor.

From the “Prompt” drop down choose “Vendor” from the list of Checkbook, Credit Card, Currency, Customer, Employee, Exchange Rate, Item, Salesperson, Tracking Number and Vendor.

In the “Address Type” field here we chose Primary.  Several fields are available to choose from, Primary, Remit To, Purchase and Ship From.  These fields link to the “Address ID” on the Vendor’s internet information card.

Custom Link3

Next Click Save on the “Create/Modify Custom Link” window and “OK” on the “Custom Link Setup” window.

 Custom Link4

Now, when you are entering in a transaction or any window where the “Vendor ID” is located you will have an additional drop down.  In this example if we click on the “IBIS, Inc.” a web browser will open taking us to the webpage.

Custom Link5

As we noted earlier this function applies to several other applications including Outlook, Word, Excel and web pages.

The easiest way to find additional information is through Dynamics GP Help window.  Open the “Custom Links” window and click on the blue question mark in the bottom right of the window to take you directly to “Adding new Custom Links.”
