Country Codes in Dynamics GP

By in Dynamics GP, System on Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

As international trading increases more and more clients are making use of the “Country Code” field in Microsoft Dynamics GP. Especially used if you are using Dynamics GP to track Intrastat statics, calculate VAT tax or keep address data for international vendors and customers.  There are other Dynamics GP modules that can use the Country Code field, such as, Payroll, EFT (Electronic Funds Transfer), Invoicing and Purchase Order Processing.

This field can be accessed on the Vendor Card, Customer Card or Company Setup window. The initial setup can be found by going to Tools>>Setup>>Company>>Company and clicking on the blue underlined Country Code name. This will open the Country Code Maintenance window. Just fill in the fields and click save. It’s that easy.

If you are new to using country codes or just curious as to their importance here is a brief overview. Country codes do have a standard which is set by the ISO (International Standards Organization). Information regarding the code standards can be found on the ISO website http://www.iso.org/iso/country_codes/iso_3166_code_lists.htm

The general coding list used is called the ISO 3166-1 code list. They reference what they call an alpha-2 character and short country name. These codes are used in the world’s postal services, European Union, Internet Domain Name system and even Federal Express who uses the IATA code list based off of the ISO 3166-1 standard, just to name a few. The ISO not only sets standards for Country Codes but Currency Codes and 17,500 other types of international standards as well. For more examples of the many areas of life and work where ISO standards provide technical, economic and social benefits, visit http://www.iso.org/iso/theisocafe.htm
